Spending time in a casino can be fun (and sometimes profitable!), but it is important to behave appropriately in order to avoid problems with the casino staff. While each casino has its own rules, there are a few general, often unwritten, rules that you will need to keep in mind to unsure you enjoy your visit.

When on the gaming floor, always be courteous to casino staff and fellow players just as you would anywhere else. Avoid consuming too much alcohol and making yourself a problem. In most casinos cell phone and cameras may not be used on the gaming floor. This is because some people have found ways to use these electronic devices to cheat, so this rule is usually strictly enforced. When playing slots or video poker, it is advised to limit yourself to just one machine if the casino is even slightly busy. Never play on more machines than you are able to monitor yourself. Playing too many machines at once is a good way to get ripped off, and it is rude to other players. If you see a cup sitting on a slot machine when looking for a machine to play, do not take that machine. Leaving a cup on the seat or handle signifies that a player got up but intends on returning to that machine.

If playing the tables is more your style, proper gaming etiquette is even more important. If you’re unfamiliar with a game and would like to just watch a hand or two, never sit down. These seats are reserved for the poker players, and the dealer will most likely ask you to move if you aren’t betting. Also, don’t expect free drinks while watching. Unless you’re playing, you will be expected to pay for your drinks. Once you are ready to sit down and play, place your money on the table rather than handing it to the dealer, and once you’ve made your bet do not touch it again unless you are getting paid. Always be polite to the dealer. If you’re on a losing streak, do not blame him or start an argument. If a dealer is rubbing you the wrong way or you’re frustrated with the way your games are going, move to another table. Tipping your dealer is always a nice thing to do, but do not think that doing so will cause him to risk his job to help you win.

Inevitably each casino will have its own set of rules. In order to have a good time and to ensure other players can enjoy their visit it is your responsibility to know and abide by these rules. If you ever have any doubt regarding appropriate conduct, it is best to consult the specific rules for the casino you are visiting. With the advent of the internet and free poker tournaments being offered can also offered by online gambling sites, its can be worthwhile once to visit a casino and play in a traditional poker environment.
